Fajardo cruise - pretty beaches, a wide variety of water sports and more
If you do cruise from the Virgins to Fajardo, Culebra, of Vieques, you should be aware that you must report your arrival to Customs. If you're in a U.S. registered vessel you can do so by telephone during normal office hours, Monday through Saturday. The British and American Virgin Islands together form one of the chartering world's most popular venues, as anyone who has cruised them will agree. Indeed, in the high tide of the charter season good anchorages are often jammed--many times with skippers whose knowledge of anchoring is limited, to say the best. But only a day's sail to the west of St. Thomas lies a scattering of small islands as attractive as the Virgins, and beyond them a stretch of coast that has become a mecca for local boaters, especially deep-sea fishermen. The islands are Vieques and Culebra, plus the latter's outliers--Culebrita, Cayo Norte, and Cayo de Luis Pena. The coast is, of course, the eastern end of Puerto Rico, centered around the town of Fajardo. The area goes by the name Vieques Sound, and boating conditions here are very similar to those in the Virgin Islands, except that there are rather more rocks and reefs, and not all of them are marked. If you're committed to a bareboat in the Virgins but interested in trying something different, your charter company may allow you to extend your cruising ground at least as far as Culebra, and it makes a very pleasant variation on the standard charter.
